Been Pondering..

Photo: © Stan B.

And after considerable consideration, think a good part of why I got such few photographic keepers at the No Kings II march was the actual tenor of the crowd itself. The whole attitude of this particular version (and it seems it wasn't just a San Francisco thing) was more upbeat and satirical, complete with an absolute plethora of costumes... particularly- The Inflatables! Satire and weird get ups are always part of the overall festivities, but this had an almost predominantly exuberant, playful Halloween costume parade feel to it!

Now, I'm all for laughs, non-violence and positive vibes- but I hope this was a one off; not just because of my own selfish photographic needs and desires, but because I think the opposition really needs to be focused, determined and sufficiently motivated to fight back this outright Fascist onslaught. MAGA is playing down and dirty, and while comic relief is often necessary to keep the temperature down, we're certainly not going to humor our way back to all we've lost, and will continue to lose in the three plus years to follow...

Sic Semper Tyrannis

There were an estimated 2,600 Anti-Trump, Anti-Fascist protests throughout big cities and small towns alike in the USA on 10/18/2025. This was The Biggest protest I ever attended in San Francisco by far, even bigger than the No Kings of June 14; could have split it in two and still had a massive protest.

Not surprisingly, took the most pictures at any one time in my life (approx 300), first time I actually used a second battery, and ironically... got one keeper I can swear to. Why such decrepitly poor photographic outcome- not sure, perhaps because this was the only somber faced fellow to be found. But ya know what they say, as long as ya get one...

More importantly- as long as the message gets across!

Snapshots On A (Fast!) Downhill Journey

You, me and a coupla million others, chief!

This time I sat on these pictures for a while cause I have the bad habit of releasing photographs unto the world before they're fully cooked. Usually, it's just the excitement of seeing something new, particularly after a long wait between pictures. Sometimes they might also be particularly timely. Unfortunately, it doesn't give me the proper time to actually notice all the unseen imperfections that remain (as opposed to the ones that I don't see at all). And it makes my editing prowess appear even less than the rudimentary level that it is.

Just a few snapshots in San Francisco of a day in April when millions across the entire country decided to step up and voice their discontent at a cult that that has needlessly launched said country into a completely voluntary disarray of self sabotage and incompetence. I really, truly do not know how any of what Trump and his admin of yes men are doing is going to lead to the betterment of our country. A man who was voted in to fix our economy on the first day of his presidency, has instead chosen a course that most people, more knowledgeable than his "very large- a brain," agree will instead, sink, doom and seal its fate! We find ourselves at the mercy of a master plan concocted by someone with... multiple bankruptcies- a man who was literally forced to sell his name as a way to evade debtor's prison; 'advised' by the likes of a financial genius who is nothing more than an anagram of a fellow flunky and criminal.

What I do know is that I plan on retiring end of this year, and don't know if I'll have to return to the workforce when I'm even older than the seventy I'll soon be. My Social Security is less and less secure with each and every passing day, as MAGA millionaires and billionaires circle the wagons licking their lips, salivating at the chance of pocketing that needless "entitlement." And it's demise might be the one, the only thing, the final straw that finally frees the MAGA minions from the numbing mind meld of a trance they have willingly capitulated to...

Hope so!

I Do...

Photo:  © Stan Banos

This SCOTUS leak has supplied what may, in fact, be the necessary spark needed for concerned citizens to wake the fuck up and fight the... FASCISTS, LIARS and ABSOLUTE CRAZIES who are incrementally taking over our country- I sure as hell hope so!

To Be, Or...

Photo: © Stan Banos**

Last weekend, I attended the Right To Life rally in San Francisco. I went there solely for the possible photographic opportunity, and I was rewarded with my one. Full disclosure- I was actually pretty anti abortion when I was younger- yeah, you could say that 12 years of Catholic schooling had something to do with it (probably the last vestige of Catholicism I shed). When I began to more closely examine those on either side, I rather quickly realized that I had a (whole) lot more in common with those who were Pro-choice, than the other side.* Why was that? I then gradually evolved the position that I've held to this day- abortion's one pretty nasty thing (to say the very least), but as long as women choose to have one (and it is their choice), then it should be as safe as medically possible. I also think that they should be properly informed (ie- not indoctrinated or browbeaten) of all possible choices/alternatives before getting one- again, the actual choice being most certainly the woman's prerogative. Too many woman have died needlessly painful deaths at the hands of incompetents throughout history, a history that cannot be allowed to repeat.

*I honestly think (most) anti-abortionists have their heart in the right place- just that it's fixated in-that-one-place. Once that baby is born (of their will and legislation), most wash their hands of any responsibility faster that Pontius Pilate in Olde Judea Towne! In fact, many willingly endorse laws and policies that will directly contribute to that child (particularly those of color) growing up with predictably subpar: housing, food, healthcare, schooling, environment and every other opportunity necessary for a decent life's outcome. Many end up in the criminal justice system, and those pro-lifers are the first to scream death penalty! Mission accomplished?

Must be said, what was also rather unsettling to see in that crowd was so many clergy (eg- priests, monks, brothers, sisters) of all Catholic denominations (eg- Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits, etc) most of them so ridiculously young (early twenties) and can't help but say... incredibly nerdy looking- all enthusiastically ambling about in their capes and robes like teenage Cosplay fans, looking for all the world as if they had the collective maturity and life experience of a twelve year old! Where are these young enthusiasts when it comes to rallies trying to save the very planet their entire flock toils upon?

** It's curious, whenever one sees a child participating at a demonstration or march to which one is aligned- one's initial thought is anywhere between how they're so cute, to how truly well informed and brought up they are by such wonderfully concerned and devoted parents. When it's a child of an opposing group, we automatically think of how abused and brainwashed that poor child is!

I've never really concerned myself with the thought of photographing famous people although I would love to take Greta Thunberg's portrait, what possesses a child of fifteen to realize the one basic truth that somehow escapes the vast majority of adults- that climate change has doomed our entire planet as we know it? Hard to believe she is now nineteen...

This little girl brought her to mind, though they likely started at opposite sides of the political spectrum on more than one topic- granted, I would most certainly hate to be remembered for my beliefs ("political" or otherwise) at her tender age.

Zine Time!

Photos: ©  Stan Banos

Was wondering if I could do anything with the small essay I did on The Commitment March of 8/28/2020- if only for presentation's sake. Not enough for a book, so... how about- a zine!? Hhmmm... If only Blurb provided such a service (if only for convenience's sake), since I was already familiar with their software. Why, yes- yes, they do!

And like their books, we're not talking premium reproductions here, as I've always said, Blurb is like the dummy for the book/publication you'd really like to have. But for... six bucks (20p incl 14 photos; pdf- $5)- can't complain all that much.

Oh, and FWIW- also got the notion to send a copy to the National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC. They've got quite an efficient online procedure for "Object Donations;" be honored if accepted, will just have to wait and see...

PS- Yes, I know- I really do need to clean the base on my monitor. What was it that Quentin Crisp used to say? Ah yes, "There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn't get any worse."
PPS-  That International Orange colored mushroom type object is the type of rivet used on The Golden Gate Bridge.

The Red, White And... Uhhh?

Hell- he's had... Three!!!               Photo: ©  Stan Banos

Republicans love the military- unless the military actually thinks before it shoots.

Republicans hate protestors and love the police- unless...

they're the ones protesting and beating on cops.

Republicans love law and order, unless they're the ones breaking it.

Republicans love our country- but they rather be a Russian than a Democrat

Yes, the hypocrisy astounds...

Natalie Keyssar

I've really been off put by all the Alex Webb imitations of late. And then I saw this, and couldn't stop looking, and haven't stopped since- 'cause it's... Transcendent! And Ms. Keyssar is quite the individual.

Choose Your Speed...

Gotta Love 'Em!                  Photo: © Stan Banos

I can only begin to guess how many protests, marches, and demonstrations the two above have between them. You just know they're hardcore (and cute), and have been for decades on in.

The two below... not so much. But while some will be quick to find fault, hey, this is where many people's participatory level lies. And at the very least, they are sympathetic- unless you apply the completely cynical view that they have that sign displayed simply so they won't be disturbed from their leisure (and no doubt, there's many a Black Lives Matter sign displayed on homes and businesses as a matter of cheap insurance rather than solidarity). But before I, or we, are so quick to judge...

Attending all the protests, doesn't do all that much once the event's over- does it? It's what we do between them that counts: voting, organizing, getting the word out, challenging the status quo.  I remember one rally where a brother informed the assembled flat out that most of them didn't have skin in the game, most of them didn't get beaten by cops where they lived, most of them hadn't gone to jail for simply standing up for their everyday rights- most of them were just there to feel good about themselves on one very beautiful day!

Now, that particular speech... didn't go down particularly well. Ya might even say a whole lotta people did not appreciate it one single bit. And I know, cause I was purposely looking about to register their looks and grunts of discomfort and disapproval. And hey, I'm not pulling a holier than thou here folks; I'm a relatively light skinned Latin X, I got some measure of anonymity- in a crowd at least, not so much in a department store ('specially when I sported a 'fro, instead of a bald head). But I've never been busted for my beliefs (or looks), so my street cred's shit. But we all must live our beliefs in between the marches to some extent- which means we all must dare beyond our comfort zones some times, if those beliefs are sincere...

Commitment March, 8/28/2020- Washington, D.C.

Photo: © Stan Banos

Took a bit of time off recently,
survived a plane ride devoid of Black Uniformed thugs loaded with gear, and made my way to The March in DC before spending a few days with moms in NYC. For the past couple of months I was hopin' and a prayin’ that it wouldn’t rain on said date, and fortunately, it didn’t- although hotter ‘n hell with humidity you could cut with a butter knife. Honestly, I don’t know how masses of people weren’t hospitalized, but then, I guess the vast majority of folks weren’t foolish enough to walk around in ninety degree heat for six hours non stop looking for photos... and it was an icee vendor when finally over that saved me from passing out.

Had always wondered what it was like to attend the original MLK march in DC back in the day over fifty years ago- the one you see with wall to wall people going towards virtual infinity on either side of the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.* Those B&W photos were almost like magic to me, and this event lived up to expectations in living color. Never did see so many damn people in one place in my life spanning several generations, two thirds Black, one third Other- and one very positive vibe throughout. We lacked the ultra-charismatic leader of an MLK, but those gathered were as in the moment, as they were committed towards the future. As one most poignant of signs put it- "They're trying to start a race war, we're trying to stop one!" Of course, there's so much more to say, so much more ugliness to address, so much division to heal..

Eventually, people made a human chain across the reflecting pool with their signs in hand- an inspirational sight to behold both in its simplicity and grandeur. Tempted as I was to follow on in for some unique photo ops and to cool my aching dogs (my younger self would have)- I just saw my current day self slippin' and a trippin' like some wounded wildebeest crossing the river with lions in pursuit. My two cameras were already smoldering to the touch and I didn't further want to test their much touted "weather resistance." So I rather wisely refrained, continuing to concentrate on the thousands of land bound subjects at hand. And when the day was done, I ended up with about a dozen strong contenders along with the blisters healing to this day. That evening it commenced to thunder, and rain fell the entirety of the following day, which was fine- the wait was over, the deed was done, the respite welcomed.

I was staying at a small B&B near Howard University, a historically Black neighborhood which was now very mixed and gleaming from that fresh squeezed, just gentrified sheen. On the surface everything was cool, people were friendly and everyone got along. But that certain new found look of forced prosperity comes at a deep and underlying cost wherever it happens, as a short talk with a local native quickly bore out. It is what it is, I suppose..

 PS- More photos to come..

*When I first visited Wash, DC, it was as a child with my family and a carload of relatives. We drove up to the the storied Lincoln Monument, and my father circled about trying to find the ever elusive parking lot. Having failed his quest, he threw his hands up, said what the hell, and parked the station wagon right smack in front of Mr. Lincoln's building. As we walked up the stairs, he turned around as we all noticed the motor cycle cop pull over to the curb, remove his helmet and shake his head at who would ever... By now dad had taken out his trusty Bell and Howell Super 8 and filmed the entire sequence with said cop, foot on bumper, writing out his ticket and placing it on the windshield before riding off on his Harley.

Fear The Combover!

If I was still teaching, I'd definitely prefer/demand/get fired for starting off every classroom day on the good foot with this National Anthem (least till Nov. 3)! And I love that catchy refrain...

Irony of... Ironies.

I love all the Yahoos getting their 'I told you so' jollies at the expense of those shot in Chaz/Chop/Whatever... somehow it's meant to prove obvious police superiority. Yet, if one follows exactly what that irony reveals- it's that anarchistic mob rule yields results similar to an officially commissioned and highly funded, equipped and 'well trained' police force...

Don't We All...

Photo: © Stan Banos

Jokes aside, everyone should be proud of who and what they are- just not at the expense of any other group, or individuals. Cause truth is, we're all flawed, all incomplete, all in need of god knows what at god knows when. Or as another sign said, "Claims of superiority are small dick energy." At least on this planet...

Those who can make you believe absurdities, can make you commit atrocities

Ya gotta give credit, where credit is due, and Donald Trump is the epitome of just how far people will not only tolerate and excuse, but ultimately reward and even praise... stupidity, if only in the name of racism (the latter just one of the shallowest and most obvious manifestations of the former).

I was thinking of posting on how Trump was surprised to learn that Britain was a nuclear power when he visited with Theresa May, or about the question that each and every reporter should keep asking each and every day until fully addressed and answered:

But this complete ARROGANCE SUPREME takes the cake for today... All Day!

I did something good: I made Juneteenth very famous. It’s actually an important event, an important time. But nobody had ever heard of it.    -Little Donnie Dotard

Nevertheless, let's all end on the ever lovin' good foot on this day of celebration with my now favorite Karen moment- of which there are many, with many sure to come. It's short, all too predictable- but 2:15 makes it all worthwhile! Peace...
